Flowers, especially oversized ones, are hot this season. They add something special to a casual outfit, or a cute summery vibe to more formal outfits. There are many ways to wear a flower clip. Go bohemian and wear your hair down or wavy, then clip the flower just behind your ear. Another idea is to tie your hair up into a top know and secure the flower clip near the bun. Even if your hair is short, you can create a tiny ponytail and put your clip on it. You can also buy elastic hair bands with large flowers attached, either to wear around a ponytail or around your head. Experiment with different sized flowers and colour too. H&M always has flower accessories- but you can easily make your own. Head to Sham Shui Po and buy some fake flowers, hair clips and a hot glue gun to create one-of-a-kind flower fashion power.

As long as it's black

I have a sleeveless black cocktail dress, and am looking for a little black jacket to complement it. I've seen a lot of suit-style jackets, but I would prefer something smaller and less formal-looking, preferably embellished with sequins. Where can I find one for an affordable price? Also, do black dresses go best with black shoes, or are shoes of other colours okay as well? ~ Cocktail Queen

Oh yes, the LBD! Everyone loves to own a Little Black Dress, but why does it have to have a black jacket over it? You can try a bit of colour. This season is all about colour, and adding a touch of colour will give you more mileage from your LBD. Instead of getting a black jacket, you could also look for an embellished cardigan to go out with the dress. A cardigan is great for throwing on over anything and look fabulous. If it is sequined or embellished it will liven up your dress and even look a bit more feminine than a jacket. A great place to look for an inexpensive cardigan is in the outlet shops on Tung Choi Street near Prince Edward.

New Look

I need a new look - I usually wear T-shirts and jeans. But I don't want to wear hot pants and vests like my friends. And how can I accessorise? Help! - New Look

There's no need to wear short shorts to look trendy this season, as slightly longer shorts are in vogue, perfect if you're nervous about showing too much leg. If you do stick to jeans, wear a slim, fitted tank and a waistcoat (with fringing if you're feeling funky) for a very "Spring 2010" look. Accessories finish any outfit, so throw on a chunky statement necklace and some bracelets. Head to Argyle Center (Mong Kok MTR exit D3) where hot pieces are available within weeks of runway shows at great prices.

Best foot forward

In the summer, my usual uniform is a crew-neck T-shirt, shorts and sandals. What sort of sandals are guaranteed to be comfortable and stylish? ~ Summer sole

I'm with you on the sandals - Hong Kong is way too hot to be in trainers all summer long. The hottest sandals this season are clog and wedge styles. While they have a little bit of a heel, they're very comfortable. If you're looking for a flat sandal alternative, the gladiator style is still in, and any kind of embellishment brings them slap up to date. These look great with shorts, but also jeans, skirts and dresses. Find a pair that is a little more dressy than flip flops, but not too over the top, so you can wear them with everything. One of the best places for shoe shopping is Granville Road in Tsim Sha Tsui every other shop seems to sell footwear.

Toes no-no

I'm allowed to wear casual clothes to school every day now. Sandals would be the easiest choice in summer, but open toed shoes aren't allowed for hygiene reasons and because they're a hazard in the science labs. Flats are a no-no because they pinch my toes. What easy to slip on, closed-toe shoes - but not Crocs - can I get for daily wear? ~ Wrong-footed

Neither Crocs - which were designed for wearing around the pool - nor heels are very sensible choices for a long day at school. You say flats pinch your toes, but I worry that perhaps you're just choosing style which don't suit your foot shape. For example, if you have wider feet than your friends, pointy shoes will pinch. Look for a round-toe flat such as a ballet slipper. They look amazing with skinny jeans, leggings, dresses or miniskirts. You might also want to try getting your shoe stretched at a shoe repair place before you wear them - sometimes hard leather can pinch your feet. A great place to find cheaper, fun shoes in all shapes, sizes and colours is Cotton On. They even have offers when you can buy two pairs for HK$99!

I'm turning 15 in a month, and while all my friends are 5"3 or taller, I'm just 5". I'm afraid i won't grown any taller, and that depress me. What (affordable) clothes will make me look taller? And where can I buy shoes to give me precious extra centimeters? Shops often don't sell heels or wedges in my size (33-35). ~ Reet petite

Don't be depressed about your height many people have a growth spurt later in their teen years. And even if you don't, a lot of famous actresses are 5"3" or less! I'm only 4"11" so I know how you feel. If you want to appear taller, dress in similar tones from top to toe, and wear vertical lines- they draw the eye up and down. Wedge heels are clogs are the hottest shoe styles this summer: they're also very comfortable, easy to walk in, and make you look much taller. Finding small sizes can be difficult, but if you know what style of shoe you want, it might be a good idea to get a pair made. Try visiting www.dyos.hk (they also have a branch in Causeway Bay). Soldier styling

I'm a guy and I'm not very tall - about 167cm - but I love boots. I'd like to wear them with my jeans tucked in, but how can I work this outfit so I look taller? ~ Boots and all

Military style is all the rage right now, so no matter how tall you are, boots will make you look super stylish. To appear taller, avoid anything that's too baggy or draws the eyes outwards, such as horizontal lines. Generally, the best way to look taller is to wear the same depth of colour from head to toe. For example, black boots and dark jeans will make your legs appear longer. If you're going to go with this combo, make sure to pair it with a dark jacket. You can also appear taller by matching your boots with a military jacket - plus the shoulder pads are a great way to add height. (this week's winner)

Red is a great colour but it makes me look too mature. I'm 16 - how can I wear it without looking old? ~ Lady in Red

Wearing red is about attitude and attention. It's also my favourite colour. Red can symbolise power and ambition, but it can also remind us of love and warmth. It is important to choose the shade of red that looks best on you: decide if you look better in an orangey red, or a more true red, because when you wear the right shade, it definitely won't make you look "mature". What is the best way to wear a dolly dress and still look slim?

Baby doll dresses are perfect for spring, as they’re lightweight and look cute. This style is also great for hiding parts of your body you’re not so crazy about, while showing off your best assets! If you don’t love your legs, wear a longer baby doll (to the knees); you could also pair it with a pair of leggings or even jeans. A lot of girls wear this style of dress to hide a tummy; the best way to do this is by picking out a dress with an empire waist. If you have an hourglass figure, throw a low-slung belt over your hips to create definition. This style is super-cute on any figure, not to mention seriously comfortable! You can find some adorable baby doll dresses in almost all of the shops at Argyle Centre in Mong Kok (MTR exit D2).

With Valentine’s Day and Lunar New Year’s day falling on the same day, I am meeting my boyfriend’s parents – what should I wear?

Meeting your other half’s parents is a pretty nerve-wrecking experience, so wear something comfortable- plan your outfit around a favourite piece of clothing. While you want to look special for your Valentine, making a good first impression on his parents should be the main priority. Try going for a look that’s demure, not sexy! A favourite outfit of mine that just screams, “I’m super cute and sweet, love me!” is a camisole (no cleavage), with a cardigan, a knee-length skirt, and a pair of girly low heels or flats. Keep it simple when it comes to makeup and jewellery, too much seems OTT. Above all else, just be happy and be yourself, what you look like matters much less if they see you’re making their son happy! Head to Giordano for cute basics at reasonable prices. If you’re looking for something a little funkier, Jardine’s Bazaar in Causeway Bay sells tons of adorable sweaters and cardigans… plus you can also find a cute accessory or two!

A lot of magazines feature thigh-high bots for this season, but I’m only 160cm. Am I too short to wear them? If not, how can I pull them off?

I feel your pain! I’m also short, but it doesn’t keep me from wearing what I want. You just have to know how to wear it. The thigh-high boot can be difficult to pull off even for the tallest, savviest fashionista. The trick is to buy them in a colour that you can easily match to tights or leggings. This will make your legs appear much longer. Keep the rest of the outfit simple and you’ll have mastered one of this season’s trickiest trends. To find a pair of thigh highs at a great price, head to Sai Yeung Choi Street (South) starting from Dundas Street and walk towards Yau Ma Tei. The deals over there can be better than the shops and there’s no shortage of this season’s hottest boots.

I have short hair and I love dangly earrings, but they never look right.

Short hair is actually the most versatile for earring wearers, as it’s perfect for showing off everything from small posts to extravagant hoops. You need to consider your hairstyle and also what you’re wearing. If you’re wearing a funky outfit, match it with funky earrings. You can also choose earrings that flatter the shape of your face. If you have a long face, look for shorter earrings; if you have a shorter face, try a longer style. If your face is narrow, wear wider earrings; if you have a round face, go for a slimmer pair. In Causeway Bay, there are loads of shops selling a huge variety of earrings very cheaply. Remember to try earrings next to your face to see how they look before you buy.

Wigs are a great way to change your look on a temporary basis. Long hair can be a lot of fun, but it can be really cool to see what you’d look like with a shorter do without making a permanent change. Since most wigs are made just across the border on the mainland, Hong Kong is overrun with wig shops. Finding good quality, reasonably priced wigs can take a littlie bit of shopping around, through. One of the best and most convenient wig spots in Hong Kong is Pottinger Street. There are a couple of shops that sell bob-style wigs in every colour under the sun for HK$100-HK$150, depending on your negotiating skills.

What a great idea. Badges on your backpack – or even on your clothes – are a great way to express your own style. Badges are making something of a comeback, and there are all sorts available: some have cute or sassy sayings, some are just cool designs. But whatever you’re looking for, there’s bound to be something out there for you. One of the best places in Hong Kong to find anything craft-related is Sham Shui Po. On Ap Liu Street, you’ll be able to find a variety of crafty bits and bobs. If you’re interested in an even more serious DIY project, head over to Nam Cheong Street, where there’s no end to the ribbons, fabric, buttons, and other crafty oddities, so you can decorate to your heart’s content.
