6 Ways to Upgrade My Wardrobe, Courtesy of Stylish Sisters

2/2/2017

Congratulations on our Colour Me Beautiful Consultant, Pavleta Petrova for being featured on Sassy Hong Kong website! Read below for Pavleta's advise on how to upgrade your wardrobe ...
Invest in yourself
By Shanel from Sassy Hong Kong

Picture
I’ve been living a lie.

I work with some seriously stylish ladies at Sassy HQ, and I get lumped in the same group as them and I’m just… not as chic. It’s never been a prerequisite to be “stylishly dressed” to work at Sassy (I must have skipped over that part in my contract…), but I still want to look presentable most of the time. The leggings with holes in them had to go, as did all my pilling jumpers. Enter Pavleta of Stylish Sisters.

An image and style consultant having trained with Eve Roth Lindsay of Colour Me Beautiful, Pavleta has started her own image consulting business, injecting her own unique sense of style in her clients’ wardrobes. She came over to my house for a personal consultation and began with a questionnaire on my style. My result came up easy: I dress for comfort. Ballet flats, jeans, leggings… anything that was easy to throw on, down to my inconspicuous jewellery.

She patiently went through clothing items that would suit my body shape: wrap dresses or skirts
(I don’t remember the last time I wore one of those), shirt-style tops (hello, sophistication), and silk scarves and big jewellery around my ears and neck to draw attention at my face.
Picture
Here are 6 things I learned from her during my consultation:

1. Accessories
Never be afraid to accessorise. No truer word was written, especially in regards to Pavleta! She rocked up with a beautiful embellished clutch in the shape of a guitar to show me. Pair it with a simple dress and boom, done. Also, I have two drawers full of gorgeous designer shoes: I should wear the more often.

2. Invest in key pieces
My wardrobe was missing some key components: a leather jacket, a trench coat (Burberry, I’m after you), and a flattering and comfortable LBD. It was time to say bye bye to fast-fashion shopping and hello to investing in key pieces that would stand the test of time.

Picture
3. Invest in basics
Key pieces are great, but you need the basics. A leather jacket will only look good if I’m wearing a plain-coloured tank or turtleneck underneath. My wardrobe was lacking tanks and turtlenecks so it was time to go hunting those down in the sales.

4. Cull the clutter
Literally, get rid of it. Donate it, throw it out, pass it to a friend. Be brutal. It’s no good in your wardrobe if it’s lost its shape, if it’s in need of repair, if it doesn’t suit your body shape, or if it doesn’t match anything else in your wardrobe. I’ve had to get rid of a few favourite jumpers because they make me look like a hobo. I also passed a gorgeous blue and pink bomber jacket (because #fashion) to Surmayee because it matched nothing in my wardrobe.

Picture
5. Storage
Fold. Your. Damn. Sweaters. Seriously, my winter gear came out from under my bed and went on wire hangers in my wardrobe. And now some of my (brand new) jumpers are out of shape around the shoulders. Sad face. Make sure you’ve got the right hangers for some items to prevent wrinkles and stretching.

6. Have your go-to looks
Know that your red jumper pairs with your grey jeans, black boots, silver necklace and grey backpack. Know that your brick-coloured shift dress goes with black stockings and brown boots and a red handbag. If you have four or five go-to looks with pieces from your wardrobe, you won’t be scrambling each morning, or you won’t be stuck on what to wear to a certain type of event.

10 Things You Don't Know About Annette Wong ...

1.  What made you decide to become an image consultant?

There is a always a call from my subconscious mind that  I can make people look great and feel confidence.  After 20 years of fashion field experience, this is the time to follow my will, and do things where my passion lies.

2. Did you grow up loving fashion or cosmetics?

Yes, I'm born to be in the fashion field as I inherited it from my mom as a seamstress.  I started to do facials when I was 16 and learnt about cosmetics and skin care. Recently I have grown conscious about anti-aging and want to share my knowledge and experience in this area with more people in need!

Picture
3. Have you ever had a total makeover? How did it change you?

Yes, I had a total makeover when I first started learning about image, colour and style with Colour Me Beautiful.  This was really useful and a major change for me was to cut my long curly hair to short bob.

With this new hair style, I feel like I am reborn, and from that day onward, I am an image consultant and not a fashion designer.

Picture
4. What is your favourite type of consultation?

I like to do group talks as this is a quick way to spread my knowledge on image and fashion, knowledge that I would like to share with more people.

5. What is your favourite colour?

Due to my fashion profession in the past, I always wear black, and my favorite colour is orange which can make me feel alive and energetic! As I'm a cool toned person, I have quite a lot of orange coloured accessories.  The cool tone in Royal Blue and Lavender clothing always makes me look bright and feel great.  I love to play around with colours...

6. How do you keep up with the trends?

My favorite websites to keep up with the trends are – Net-a-Porter, Vogue.com, Style.com which enable me to have access to most of the designer fashion labels.  For street styles – Pinterest and Instagram inspire me a lot on what people like most.  I cannot forget my best friend – Facebook, which allows me to have access to all other popular topics within one site.  And of course a special thanks to all my Facebook friends' contributions.

Picture
7. If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?

Amsterdam,  I used to travel to Amsterdam at least 4 times every year and stay there for at least 2 weeks.  The things that impress me most are that the people there are really nice and made you feel homey.  I feel its a safe place to live in, very international, no discrimination, very liberal, air quality is good...

8. Where are your favourite places to shop?

Wow, that's a lot! London, Antwerp, Milan, Paris, New York, Tokyo and most recently, Seoul!  I used to work in the fashion industry for 20 years, and so business trips to the worldwide fashion centres were part of my job.  Don't envy me, that's not an easy job and made me look 10 years older than my actual age.  After quitting my full time job and started to fall in love with myself, I am now looking 10 years younger than my actual age, just come and chat with me, I can tell you how!

Picture
9. What do you like best about your job?

The best part about my job is that in every encounter with clients, I feel very good.  Good in a sense that most of the time, clients feedback is very positive on how helpful the consultation session is.  Not that only because of the appreciation but I can help my clients to achieve what they want to achieve.

10. Do you have any fashionable words of wisdom to share?

The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams – Eleanor Roosevelt

10 things you didn't know about Pavleta Petrova ...

1/22/2016

Picture
1. What made you decide to become an image consultant? .
This job embraces everything I love in life: Fashion, Stylish Outfits, Make Up, Organized and Neat Wardrobes, Shopping, but also Reading, Conducting healthy lifestyle, Exercising, Communicating and helping people, Writing, Taking pictures, having fun. A dream job that becomes a dream life

2. Did you grow up loving fashion or cosmetics?
Yes, here is the story It comes from long time ago - and yet perhaps it wasn't such a very long time ago -
there lived me, a little always smiling girl and...The stylish sisters, my grandmother and her four sisters. Five fabulous young ladies who knew how to stay chic all the time. And even at the age of 80 my grandmother
would not go out without matching her colours and wearing a hat. Old fashioned? Too pretentious? Noo, just utterly STYLISH!

In the era of blue jeans and t-shirts (nothing against it, actually if worn in the right occasion and with the right accessories, could be really sexy), it is not a bad thing to look back and learn something from that old school. I did learn a lot from those meticulous ladies and saw my grandmother every day sewing perfect blouses, dresses, jackets and more for her clients. I saw her attention to details and my mothers' attention to details, matching colours and styles, being glamorous.

Not to mention my own older sister! Every time I see her, I admire her innate taste and how fast she is in figuring out the perfect clothes and accessories fusion. So CREATIVE!
And here comes me, after a lifetime of style lessons, I started what has been in my blood, in my thoughts and in my dreams, helping other ladies learn the secrets of Style and Colour and give homage to The Stylish Sisters!

Picture
3. What is your favourite colour?
NO such a thing. Love them all!!! But the knowledge about what colours are more suitable for me made me avoid some. Must have colours in my wardrobe are all the earthy colours such as chocolate brown, mahogany, rust, coral, terracotta and a lot of green. Did I mention navy? Warm everywhere!
4. How would you describe your own personal style?
There is a bit of DRAMA in every outfit I wear. Love the wow effect! An oversized colourful stones dragon brooch on the top of a white panama hat; embroidered silk robe over swimwear, jean sneakers with a colourful knee length a line skirt, denim and tank top with a long turquoise or pearl necklace. These are just a few examples of how I play the game. There is also a natural part of my style, which never sacrifices comfort. I have two little boys. I drive and work, constantly running out of time. Even so I still enjoy my silver Manolo Blahnik heels while on vacation or when I am stepping out of the cab and stepping in the restaurant.

Picture
5. Who is your celebrity style icon?
Fashion fades, style is eternal! Who said that? Right, Coco Chanel! Mademoiselle is my celebrity style icon. How much wisdom and creativity in this woman! Simply admirable! I love to wear a long Chanel pearl necklace mixed and matched with a casual outfit. I adore wearing a little black dress and I never feel over or underdressed with it.  I actually love Rihanna too. She represents my dramatic style part.

6. How do you keep up with the trends?
I love knowing what is trendy, but I do not make a big deal about the trends when it comes to updating my wardrobe. I buy when I really love something. Of course it happens that I buy the latest trend, but just because it is TOTALLY ME. For example the flares this year were a big trend so I bought a pair of new black flares because I love this kind of cut.  Boyish style is also trendy but I don’t want to dress like a man from head to toe.

Picture
7. What did you enjoy most about training to become a consultant?
I enjoyed every single minute and every single tip about my dream job. More than everything else I enjoyed spending time with Eve and checking her stylish outfits every day. She is one of the loveliest women I have ever met.

8. Where are your favourite places to shop?
ITALY! ITALY! ITALY! When the desire to go shopping is urging and Italy is not around the corner I go to Ralph Lauren, Brooks Brothers, Reiss, Club Monaco and I am a BIG FAN of Accessorize. Why? I love their inexpensive, fun jewelry and handbags. I already own a collection of colourful earrings from them.

Picture
9. What is your biggest fashion faux pas? Bonus if you have an old photo! :)
Back in 1994 I used to have a Dalmatian female dog.  I got so inspired by her spotted coat that every time I walked her I wore a little spotted t-shirt, same as hers as well as a metal collar. I bet you would love to see a picture of that outfit. NEVER!

10. Do you have any fashionable words of wisdom to share?
Do not look like me, look like you, but let me help you look your best!

10 things you didn't know about Chris Uljee ...

8/20/2015

Picture
Where are you from? Why did you end up in the country you're in now?
I was born in a city called Hamilton on the North Island of New Zealand. After university I moved to Wellington where I now live. Lonely Planet has called Wellington the "Coolest Little Capital in the World". It's  also been described as "a city that merges big city culture with small town charm and is known as being socially and environmentally conscious. Declared nuclear weapon free over 30 years ago in 1982, it was also the first capital city in the southern hemisphere to gain Fair Trade status, and is home to the world-leading Zealandia sanctuary".

What made you decide to become an image consultant?
When I was younger I had my colours done by a Colour Me Beautiful consultant. It was a very affirming and empowering experience. With this new knowledge, I felt so much more confident about buying and wearing clothes.

The main reason that I decided to train as an image consultant is that I thought it would be very rewarding to be able to give that knowledge and assistance to others so that they too could feel more empowered, more confident about their image, know what to buy so that they always looked good and find out how they could save money along the way.

Did you grow up loving fashion or cosmetics?
Actually no. Until I got my colours done it was all a big mystery to me. I'm not a fashionista by any means, but I have always loved good design and use of colour. These days I can admire fashion and makeup in magazines, on people and in the shops and understand why and how it all works.

Picture
Describe a consultation with a client that went really well (i.e. s/he really loved their new colours or style)
One of my clients is very petite. I did both a colour and style consultation for her. Before the consultation most of her clothes where too big, making her looked swamped and like a child in her mother's clothes. Adding to that, she was wearing the wrong colours. During the consultation, I showed her that she could look younger, healthier and more vibrant wearing the right colours. I showed her how quite simple things like changing her hemlines and getting her proportions right could make a huge difference to her overall look. To say she felt better after the consultation is an understatement! Not only did she feel great, but she got many complements from others about how stylish and elegant she now looked. Personally for me that was so rewarding to know that I'd made a positive difference for her.

What is your favourite type of consultation?
It's hard to choose one! I like anything that leaves my clients feeling empowered and more confident in themselves.

What is your favourite colour?

In the past I would have said blue, but these days I enjoy all the colours in my palette and playing with putting different combinations of colours from that palette together. Having a whole palette of colours that look good on you gives you lots of options!

How would you describe your own personal style?
I would say over the years I've experimented quite a bit with my style. These days I like a simple and elegant look and I like to feel comfortable in the clothes I wear — if it digs in or pinches it's not an option for me!

Picture
What did you enjoy most about training to become a consultant?
Training with Eve was a very special experience for me. Before the training I thought there would be parts of it that I wouldn't enjoy, but I would just have to get through those bits. I actually loved all of it. Eve was very inspiring and such a good teacher. My goal is to be an image consultant who is as competent and  successful as she is!

What do you like best about your job?
Helping people feel better about themselves. I can't help but be excited when I show clients the colours that work on them. Its great when they get it, but also personally I get such a buzz every time I see it myself.

Do you have any fashionable words of wisdom to share?

Find out what colours and styles suit you, so that you can create and enjoy your own unique style. That way you won't be driven by someone else's random ideas of what you should wear or just buying what's in the shops because you have no idea. As Vera Wang says, "A woman is never sexier than when she is comfortable in her own clothes".

Ella said, "When you wear colour near your face, the light reflects it upwards; this can cast either flattering tones or dark shadows, depending on the mix of the colour and your skin tone. This is one reason why it is important to work out your dominant colouring type and discover which are the right colours for you"
