Do you know the difference between Season System and Tonal System for colour analysis?

Aș a leading brand with 42-year history providing colour and style consultation, Colour Me Beautiful is definitely an expert and with good experience in both methodologies.

The Limits of Traditional Season System for Colour Analysis

In a traditional Season Colour Analysis, a consultant mainly looks into skin tone. Based on that, you will be quickly categorised into Warm or Cool category which makes you either Spring/Autumn or Summer/Winter. It comes with two problems:

First, skin tone is not a very reliable indicator as our skin tone may change from time to time following the seasons (for example, your skin may look paler and rosier in winter, whereas more tanned with golden glow in summer) , and according to our health condition. When we get aging, our skin tone would change too.

This is how our Colour Me Beautiful Managing Director Cliff Bashforth changes along the year. When he was younger, he had a well-blended look with warmer tone on the hair and skin tone. Along the years, his look is getting "cooler". Nowadays he will look more energetic to dress cooler colour with contrast on the top

Lisa from Blackpink is another great example to show why skin tone cannot be the single index for colour analysis. When she changes her hair colour, it alters her look and thus she will inevitably need to change the colours she wears in outfits and make-up to better coordinate her new look. Actually it also happens commonly to any of us- you'll find your usual outfits and make-up do not work that well anymore after changing hair colour. The new image you gains sometimes means you'll need to find a new way to wear your wardrobe.

Secondly, not everyone has an obvious cool or warm skin tone. That explains why some of us may look equally great while wearing certain cool and warm colours. In that sense, Season System may limit you from wearing half of your most flattering colours.

What Is Munsell Tonal System

Tonal System is a unique methodology for colour analysis based on the theory of Albert Munsell. The system breaks down colour into three characteristics:

  • The Value (Depth): light or deep colour- e.g. icy blue vs. navy

  • The Hue (Undertone): warm (yellow-based) or cool (blue-based) colours

  • The Chroma (Clarity/Contrast): clear (bright, intense) or soft (muted, low-contrast)- eg. bright emerald green vs. soft sage green

In a Tonal Colour Analysis, we look into the combination of your hair colour, eye colour and skin tone to discover your Dominant colouring type, which determines your first impression to others and your best dressing strategy.

Six Dominant Colouring Types

After determining your Dominant colour type, you’ll have 30 or 42 colours in your palette. These are the colours working harmoniously with your face, making you look healthy, energetic and confident effortlessly.

The Tonal system is flexible- it's beyond races, and it allows us helping you transit to a new colour palette when you go through some changes on the appearance, which would possibly create a new personal image for you.
